This DAF Day, Help Courageous Stories Move Us Forward

DAF Day | Thursday, October 8, 2026

“Motus Theater is one of the most precious assets in our community. Their performances gently invite us to lean into a present where stories teach us how to be human again.”
—Dr. Nabil Echchaibi, Professor of Media Studies, CU Boulder

At Motus Theater, we believe original theater and autobiographical storytelling can open doors to understanding, build connections across differences, and inspire more compassionate communities and more humane policies.

This DAF Day, we invite you to put your generosity behind autobiographical monologues of immigrants, transgender and nonbinary leaders, people impacted by incarceration, working families living on a low income, and people impacted by dementia. By recommending a grant from your donor-advised fund (DAF), you can help bring their stories to stages, community gatherings, and civic spaces where meaningful conversations begin.

Your gift supports artistically excellent original theater that places center stage leaders on the frontlines of violence, sharing their experiences in their own words, bringing audiences into meaningful dialogue, and creating opportunities for listening and connection in a divided world.

Whether Motus stories reach legislators, law enforcement, educators, faith leaders, business leaders, or neighbors gathered in a theater, our goal remains the same: to move stories that move us forward.

Your Generosity in Action

In 2025, Motus Theater demonstrated what is possible when our community invests in courageous storytelling.

76%

of expenses devoted to programming

Supporting original theater, community engagement, and the storytellers at the heart of our work.

19,000+

people reached

Through performances, exhibitions, and civic partnerships across Colorado and beyond.

Behind those numbers are people sharing deeply personal experiences, and audiences discovering new ways to understand one another.

Stories from the frontlines of the juvenile legal system

Through Youth Behind & Beyond Bars, men who experienced incarceration as youth share their autobiographical stories, illuminating the lasting impacts of the juvenile legal system and possibilities for prevention, healing, and change.

When anticipated National Endowment for the Arts funding for the project's Boulder County premiere and tour was withdrawn, members of our community stepped forward to help make the performances possible.

Thanks to the Motus community’s investment, in 2026, Youth Behind & Beyond Bars Storytellers presented for legislators at the Colorado Capitol, at the Colorado Public Defender’s Conference, and the Colorado Diversion Conference, reaching thousands.

Stories that deepen understanding across differences

Through TRANSformative Stories and What Love Requires, transgender and nonbinary leaders and parents of transgender and nonbinary people share their experiences of identity, family, love, and belonging.

In 2026, these stories reached legislators at the Colorado Capitol to honor Transgender Day of Visibility, and were presented at the largest gathering of progressive advocates in the country at Netroots Nation National Conference.

Stories That Make Room for Reflection about Love & Caregiving

In 2026, Motus founder Kirsten Wilson returned to the stage with No Contract, an autobiographical performance inspired by her experience caring for her mother through dementia. Blending Shakespeare, physical comedy, live violin, and audience karaoke, the production explores love, dignity, caregiving, and the impossible choices families sometimes face.

Through laughter and heartbreak, No Contract invites audiences to confront difficult questions about aging, memory, and mortality while celebrating the love and joy that can endure even as our minds change.

Stories that bring communities together

From bringing immigrant storytellers to the Colorado Capitol through ImmigrantAmerica to helping Boulder residents share their experiences through Motus Playback Theater, Motus creates opportunities for people to listen, reflect, and build connections across differences.

Thank you for your support!

Your DAF grant helps sustain this work and bring more stories to the people and places where they can make a difference.
