JustUs: Stories from the Frontlines of the Criminal Justice System with DA Brian Mason

  • via Zoom Boulder, CO (map)

“I love these monologues because they shift the narrative that has enabled systems of oppression in the U.S.” - Bryan Stevenson, ED of the Equal Justice Initiative

“Motus Theater has provided a voice to those who were voiceless. As a result, a lot of people are speaking about things that they weren't speaking about: the injustices of the justice system and its punitive damage.” - Juaquin Mobley, JustUs monologist

In collaboration with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office (Adams and Broomfield Counties, CO), Motus Theater presents JustUs: Stories from the Frontlines of the Criminal Justice System

In this performance, special guest District Attorney Brian Mason models civic hospitality and moral courage as he reads aloud, and reflects upon, Motus JustUs monologist Juaquin Mobley’s story of systemic oppression and his insistence on transforming the brutality he was given as a DOC number into his own armor and influence.

In between the reading of the story and the conversation between Mason and Mobley, we will hear the powerful music of the nationally touring a cappella group Spirit of Grace. Their healing music will help us reflect on current injustices within the criminal legal system and imagine opportunities for true justice.

The JustUs project was developed by Motus Theater in 2019 and premiered as a keynote at the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice Conference in front of 1,600 stakeholders. Since then, the JustUs monologues have been featured in several national and global conferences and have been read and embraced by religious, social justice, civic and law enforcement leaders across the state. The powerful monologues explore themes such as racial profiling, inequality in the bond/bail system, human rights abuses in prisons, criminalizing substance abusers and the systemic racism and poverty that pushes people into illicit economies.

Autobiographical monologues within the JustUs project were created in collaboration with Motus Theater Artistic Director Kirsten Wilson. Performance presented by Motus Theater - creators of UndocuAmerica, JustUs, Women of Resolution, Rocks Karma Arrows, and the Shoebox Stories Podcast.
